Serum immunoglobulin levels in giardiasis.

چکیده
Giardiasis is a common disease of the small intestine of man caused by the flagellated protozoan parasite. The influence of host immunity on infection and on modulating its clinical course remains uncertain. Infection in some hosts may be short lived and spontaneously self-limited, while in others it may result in prolonged debilitating illness. Though specific antibody msponse occurs in the host following G. lamblia infection, the immune alteration especially at the gut level which allows the parasite to colonize, multiply and damage the brush border membrane are ill understood. Local immune factors responsible for elimination of parasite are not clear. Susceptibility to giardiasis has been closely miated to the immunological status of the host. Increased incidence of giardiasis has been reported in adults having low levels of immunoglobulins. This study was done to determine serum immunoglobulin levels in giardiasis.

Comparison of Trace Elements of Zinc and Copper Between Children with Giardiasis and Healthy
Background and Aims: Giardia lamblia infection is a common cause of food and water-borne diarrhea in non-sanitary communities. Infections are common in children, particularly in child-care centers, backpackers, travelers, and homosexuals. Zinc is necessary for the immune system functions. Zinc deficiency is associated with acute diarrhea. Copper is essential for the production of red blood cell...

متن کاملSmall intestinal nodular lymphoid hyperplasia in patients with giardiasis and normal serum immunoglobulins.
Nodular lymphoid hyperplasia of the upper small intestine was demonstrated in 25 patients with giardiasis. All had normal serum immunoglobulin levels and seven patients initially presented with clinical findings suggestive of an abdominal lymphoma. In only two, however, was the diagnosis of primary jejunal lymphoma confirmed. It is possible that an aetiological relationship exists between recur...
متن کاملSerum Iron Concentration in Children with Giardiasis
SUMMARY Giardia is a protozoan parasite which exists in the small intestine in man. This parasite could act as a barrier against fat absorption. It also results in anemia as a result of interference with folic acid vitamin B6 and probably iron absorption. In this study a total of 198 infested and 35 noninfested school children were studied for serum Iron and TIBC. The results showed the Iron...

Background: Beta-thalassemia major is one of the major health problems in our country. Many studies have confirmed the fact that, these patients have an increased susceptibility to bacterial infections. Objective: In this study, we have assessed the humoral immune system in 68 thalassemic patients by measuring their serum concentration of Immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, IgA, C3 and C4 in order to ...
